Industrias Ferri has developed several equipments for the deck of the Blue Eagle, the latest vessel to come out of Astilleros Armón for the Mexican group Durandco. It is a hybrid motorized vessel for the production, storage and unloading of crude oil, equipped with the most advanced technology in the sector. Ferri’s equipment includes an electro-hydraulic crane with the capacity to handle 20 tons at 20 meters on an oil platform in offshore conditions.

The Blue Eagle is an FPSO (production, storage and transfer of crude oil) vessel, especially suitable for offshore operations. It is 106 meters long, 25 meters wide, 32 meters high and displaces 10,406 tons. It was presented by Armón as the most modern process vessel in the Gulf of Mexico and as a milestone for the Spanish shipbuilding industry. It is also the first of its class equipped with hybrid propulsion by combining diesel and electricity, an unprecedented solution in the sector. It was christened on July 23 in Gijón and delivered to the Mexican group Durandco to join its Blue Marine division, one of the largest offshore service providers in Mexico and Latin America.

In order to meet the client’s demanding specifications, Astilleros Armón entrusted Industrias Ferri to equip a large part of the Blue Eagle’s deck equipment. The systems designed and developed by Industrias Ferri include two combined anchor windlasses (with a 60K3 chain chain winch, a mooring reel for 260 meters of 60 mm forestay and an electrically variable displacement hydraulic motor drive), two stoppers, two electric vertical winches (with a capacity of six tons at 16 meters per minute) and two articulated electrohydraulic cranes, one for loading operations on board and the other for handling personnel and cargo outside the ship.

Ferri electrohydraulic cranes

The first articulated electrohydraulic crane is specially developed for cargo handling on oil rigs in offshore conditions, with a capacity of 20 tons at 20 meters or 10 tons at 31 meters. In case of personnel handling, it can operate with two tons at 32 meters in offshore conditions.

The second articulated electrohydraulic crane is intended for onboard cargo handling. In this case, its capacity in sheltered waters is 6 tons at 16 meters, and offshore is 3 tons at 16 meters or 6 tons at eight meters.

All Industrias Ferri’s equipment for the Blue Eagle has been designed, manufactured and tested according to the demanding DNVGL regulations, and has the capacity to operate in ATEX environments (explosive atmospheres).

Industrias Ferri has been designing and manufacturing custom marine equipment since 1964 and has been present in the ornamental mining machinery sector since 1984. In 2018 it created the Ferri Systems division for the development of technologies in drives and controls. The Talleres Carral division is a leading manufacturer of winches, winches and capstans and will be 100 years old in 2021.
